About This Quote

This quote is commonly known as the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States. It was first recited in 1892 by Francis Bellamy at the Springfield, Massachusetts, U.S. National Exhibition of Education. The first pledge reads: “I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” The phrase “under God” was added in 1954 by an act of Congress, although it had been part of the Pledge since 1923.
